Welding and repairing shredder rotors
Welding and repairing shredder rotors restores worn surfaces and extends the rotor’s lifespan. By reinforcing parts prone to wear, it improves the shredder’s efficiency and reliability. 1. Laser cladding: extended service life for wear parts in the recycling industry
In the recycling industry, wear parts are constantly exposed to extreme wear and tear. Using laser cladding, we apply a wear-resistant layer that significantly extends the service life of components such as hammermill hammers. The laser beam operates with precision and minimal heat input, ensuring that even thinner components retain their shape. The result: fewer replacements, less downtime and components that can withstand the harsh recycling conditions.

Rotor refurbishment breathes new life into Vecoplan shredder
At the start of a household waste processing line is a Vecoplan shredder, which is used as a bag opener. The rotor of this machine is subjected to heavy impact and wear from abrasive particles on a daily basis. As the rotor is located right at the start of the process, any wear has a direct impact on the rest of the plant. When the rotor needed replacing, an alternative was already on the table, but it involved a long lead time and high costs. Overhauling offered an attractive alternative, but also presented a challenge: after the overhaul, the rotor had to fit exactly back into the existing shredder. Not only did the wear-resistant layer have to be correct, but the dimensions were also crucial. Even a small deviation can affect the cutting performance, the material flow and, ultimately, the plant’s capacity. Furthermore, no original production drawing was available, so we had to base our work on the existing geometry and our experience with similar refurbishments. We carried out a full survey of the rotor, recorded the dimensions and worked step by step to repair the wear, without losing sight of the original geometry. For us, refurbishment means not just applying a new wear layer, but ensuring that a component functions as intended once again. The result: the rotor is once again ready for a new period of operation and once more meets the required dimensions and tolerances. By opting for refurbishment instead of replacement, a significant amount of material has been saved and the need for an expensive new rotor has been avoided, whilst the installation continues to operate reliably.

A wire screen is used to separate materials by size. Welding the edges extends the service life of the wire screen.
In a busy recycling plant, a crucial piece of equipment was in operation: the wire screen. This enormous grid separated materials such as sand, gravel and wood waste, which are essential for the reuse of raw materials. After years of intensive use, the wires of the screen began to wear out, leading to inefficiencies in the separation process. This is where welding came into play. The worn areas on the screen deck were expertly welded, restoring the wires to their original strength. This not only extended the service life of the screen deck but also ensured that the machine functioned optimally once again. The repaired wire screens were once again able to handle heavy loads without allowing any material to escape. Thanks to the welding repairs, the factory did not need to purchase expensive replacements. This process of repair and reinforcement restored the wire screen to its role as a reliable link in the recycling chain, ready for many years of service.
